THE MATRIX
dir: Andy Wachowski; Larry Wachowski

"Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet." - Agent Smith

Why It's Here
The Wachowski Brother's science fiction masterpiece is one of the most significant pieces of modern cinema. It's influence has sparked debates, lectures, and school courses dedicated to understanding it's deep message of reality, culture, and Christianity. In a world that isn't really real, the all-knowing Morpheus asks the perplexing question, "what is real?". The unnerving sense of helplessness and not knowing the truth is what drives this paranoid thriller.

Reviving the cyber-punk genre, "The Matrix" set the bar for visual effects and action films in general to a new height. With special effects years ahead of it's time including the widely praised, innovative slow-motion or still motion panning shots of bullet dodging and kung-fu kicks. The film introduces martial arts to a modern American audience in ways never seen before. Cheographed brilliantly, "The Matrix" is an unforgettable experience that is a true milestone for contemporary film and one of the most important films in decades. As the Wachowski's most celebrated film, if you haven't seen "The Matrix", you are missing out on one of the finest films ever put to screen.
